The Castle of Capdepera, a medieval fortress in former times impenetrable against attack

Located at a strategic point in Majorca, high up on the Puig de Capdepera at 159 metres, there it solemnly sits, a medieval fort that in past years guarded the zone, day and night, against possible threats arriving by land and sea.

The Castle of Capdepera, a triangular-shaped, walled enclosure, covers an area of more than 8,000 m2. It was rebuilt in 1300 on the remains of a Moorish villa.

Here the surrender of the Muslims of Menorca was planned and signed during the reign of King James I of Aragon. It was before the conquest of Valencia and after the monarch succeeded in deceiving the Saracens, making them believe that a large army was in Majorca preparing to invade them. Large bonfires burning on the coast of Capdepera, visible from the north-eastern coast of Menorca, convinced them of this fact and concluded with the signing of the Treaty of Capdepera. The Muslims remained in Menorca, accepting submission to the King of Aragon under tribute.

It was King James II that ordered its reconstruction as a fortified town in the 14th century, in order to repopulate the zone and take control of the maritime communication in the channel that joins the two islands.

The most dynamic time at the Castle of Capdepera, with regard to occupation and activity, was focussed around the 16th and 17th centuries, as Majorca, given its location, was subject to constant pirate attacks, disembarkations, raids and plundering, a danger that started to subside in the 18th century. It was only then that the inhabitants of the fortified town gradually decided to start abandoning their walled enclosure to build larger and more comfortable homes beyond the walls.

In 1854, the Castle of Capdepera became a military site under the mandate of a governor, but it was eventually fully vacated to come into municipal ownership.

Declared a Place of Cultural Interest (BIC), it is a location that is highly attractive for its architectural beauty, its history and the scenery that surrounds it. It is a place that anyone who is in the area simply must visit, at any time of the year. The enclosure has a church inside, the Chapel of Our Lady of Hope, that has an interesting interior with a Gothic statue of Christ carved out of orange wood, and also magnificent views that can be enjoyed from it (it is the highest point in the castle).

A good time to visit is during the third weekend in May, when the entire site is decked out to celebrate the tradicional Medieval Market.
