Demons and fire light up the magical night honouring Saint Antony in Capedepera

Majorca begins the year by celebrating one of the most popular festivals on the island, Saint Antony.

It’s a tradition with religious spirit which over the years has become a not-to-miss date for all locals and visitors who wish to enjoy the local and festive traditions.

Municipalities like Capdepera, Artà, Manacor, Santa Margalida, Pollensa and Sa Pobla intensively observe the magical night of ‘revetlla’, marking the beginning of the winter solstice and celebrating the triumph of good over evil by dramatising the unsuccessful temptations suffered by Anthony the Great at the hands of the devil during his pilgrimage through the desert.

Huge bonfires are lit on 16th January, the eve of Saint Antony’s Day, as ‘els dimonis’ pour out into the streets with their tridents and cowbells engaging in unique dances around the fires as people meet up to enjoy the night, roast local products over the fires and sing popular songs to the rhythm of the hand drums.

Another of the most popular and traditional events organised in conjunction with this festival is ‘les Beneïdes’. It’s a popular ceremony in which a priest blesses all pets that come out with their owners, one by one. This happens on the morning of 17th January.

People say that the Christian monk Anthony the Great was an animal lover who would look after all the animals that approached him and would cure them when injured.
